Maths

At Westfield Nursery and Primary School, we use the White Rose Maths curriculum as a tool to deliver a mastery approach across all classes. The White Rose curriculum has been meticulously designed by expert teachers who have created high-quality resources for all year groups. The White Rose Scheme of Learning takes the main learning objectives from the National Curriculum and breaks them down into teaching blocks across each term.

The White Rose Curriculum uses a mastery approach to maths teaching. This is a research-driven teachgin and learning method that meets the goals of the National Curriculum.

What does it mean in practice? In summary, a mastery approaqch.

  • Puts numbers first: The White Rose schemes have number at theri heart, because confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole.
  • Puts depth before breadth: reinforcing kowledge again and again.
  • Encourages collaboration: children can progress through the scheme as a group, supporting each other as they learn.
  • Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need to become competent mathematicians.

Maths In The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Within the EYFS, the White Rose curriculum aims to instil positive attitudes to maths at an early stage with maths resources that help children learn in fun, hands-on, practical ways. As with all the White Rose resources, teh reception scheme breaks down into blocks and from blocks into easy, logical steps. At school, we use books, games, rhymes, daily routines, and outdoor activities to nurture an enjoyment of the subject from an early age. We let children explore mathematical concepts with curiosity and without a fear of making misakes.

Maths for Years 1 - 6

All the White Rose material is designed to support primary children as they have fun with maths, exploring everything from times tables and number bonds to money and multiplication. The White Rose primary maths resources are designed to instil a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts using a full range of fun, inspiring classroom activities. Each year group follows their own Scheme of Learning which is then broken down into lessons where CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) method is used to deliver maths lessons. Reseach shows that when children are introduced to a new concept, working with concrete physical resources abd pictorial representations leads to a better understanding of abstract concepts. At the end of each unit, the children are then assessed to help monitor their progress. Whilst using the White Rose Curriculum, teachers also use a variety of other resources that support the children's learning in different ways.
